Scotland

Scotland is the north part of Great Britain. This part is full of mountains and lakes. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis.

There are a lot of lakes. The biggest lake is Loch Lomond. It is 36 kilometers long. The sea nearly cuts the mountains into three parts.

Five million people live in Scotland. A lot of people live in the Lowlands. Glasgow, the largest city, is between the river Clyde and the river Forth. Edinburgh, the capital, is on the Forth. There are two other large cities: Dundee and Aberdeen.

Every summer thousands of people visit Edinburgh for the Festival. They can listen to music and watch plays. Jim: I say, Cathy, how about Sarah’s party on Saturday? We all are going to be there. Are you coming too?

Cathy: I wish I could, Jim. But we are moving the house this Saturday and I need to help my family with all that stuff.

Jim: You are moving! Where to? Is it far from here?

Cathy: No, not really. And fortunately I won’t have to change school. There’s another school much closer to our new home, and my parents wanted to put me there at first, but I didn’t agree. It’ll take me a bit longer to get to my old school in the morning, but I’ll stay with my old friends.

Jim: Great! And what’s your new home look like?

Cathy: Right. And mum promised to put new furniture in my room. I need to choose what I want and then we’ll discuss where we can buy it. If it’s not very expensive, of course.

1. People have lived on our planet for many years. We may live on different continents and in different countries, but we all depend on our planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around us. We must take care of Earth but not destruct wildlife. Many species of animals and birds are disappearing nowadays. Greenpeace began its work 20 years ago from saving whales. And now Greenpeace is a world-famous organization, which saves plants, animals and people.

4. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons ol dust and harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut down and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of lakes and rivers dry up. The pollution of air and the world destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crises.

5. Numerous conferences have been held to discuss questions of ecologically pool regions including the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass, Seiriipalatsinsfc and Chernobyl. An international environmental research center has been set up on Lake Baikal. Scientists are also doing much to preserve the environment. But these are only the initial steps that must be carried forward to protect not only for the sake of the present but for the future generations.

Пояснительная записка к вводному диагностическому тесту по английскому языку, 11класс.

Вводные диагностические тесты по английскому языку за курс основной школы для учащихся 10 класса разработаны на основе примерной программы основного общего образования по иностранным языкам (английский язык).

Целью проведения вводного диагностического теста является объективная оценка качества знаний учащихся, приобретенных ими за курс основной школы.

Тест состоит из 3 блоков: «Лексико-грамматический», «Чтение» и «Страноведение».

Лексико-грамматический блок включает в себя 18 заданий различного уровня сложности и предполагает контроль знаний грамматических явлений, изученных учащимися, таких как множественное число существительных, употребление артиклей, местоимений, степеней сравнения прилагательных, предлогов, видовременных форм глагола, согласования времен, модальных глаголов, неличных форм глаголов, а также знаний норм словообразования и порядка слов в предложении.

Блок «Чтение» содержит текст объемом около 150 слов и 4 задания к нему, которые предполагают проверку уровня сформированности умений учащихся в двух видах чтения: 1) понимание основного содержания прочитанного; 2) умения извлекать необходимую информацию из текста.

Задания по прочитанному тексту предполагают контроль понимания учащимися логических связей, умение выделять основную мысль и извлекать нужную информацию.

В блок «Страноведение» включены задания социокультурного характера, предполагающие проверку знаний основных сведений о странах изучаемого языка.

Все задания в экзаменационных тестах составлены в соответствии с I, II, III и IV уровнем сложности и оцениваются по балльной системе, т. е. каждый правильный ответ оценивается в один балл. Максимальное количество баллов – 24.

Инструкция к выполнению каждого задания дается на русском языке, т. к. чтение инструкции не должно создавать дополнительной сложности для учащихся.

Учащимся дается 30 минут для выполнения теста. Пользоваться словарем не разрешается.

К тесту прилагаются ключи для проверки правильности выполнения заданий учащимися.

In 1775, when the American War of Independence began, George Washington was chosen to lead the American army. Washington knew his job would be difficult. The army was small. The soldiers were untrained and had few guns. The British army was large and strong. Its soldiers were very well trained.

O H What exactly is cloning? According to the Human Genetics Advisory Commission, cloning is defined as producing a cell or organism with the same nuclear genome as another cell or organism. Basically, that means that a clone is a living being with exactly the same DNA as another living being. At the time of writing, some mammals have successfully been cloned, but humans have not. 1 Although frogs were first successfully cloned in the 1950s, it was not until the mid-1990s that cloning became a major political issue. This was when Dolly the sheep became the first successfully cloned adult mammal. Suddenly, it seemed that the cloning of humans had gone out of the realm of science fiction and was close to becoming scientific fact. Some people were extremely excited by this prospect. Others were extremely worried. 2 So, why are some scientists so keen to clone human cells? First of all, it s important to understand that cloning human cells does not necessarily mean that you make a new human being. Scientists believe that in the future we will be able to clone human organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys which we ll be able to use in transplant operations. They also think that cloning will help us get rid of genetic diseases and will allow infertile couples to have children. 3 However, most scientists are against human cloning at present because they argue it is not safe. It took 272 attempts before the cloning of Dolly, and even she did not enjoy good health. At present, we do not have technology to safely clone humans. But what if we are able to solve the safety issues? Will human cloning be acceptable then? Many politicians and religious leaders say no. Анапа

3 4 There are both political and ethical arguments against human cloning. Some religious groups say that cloning would allow us to play God: to determine the sex, the eye colour, even the height of our children. They say this is morally wrong. Others argue that clones will suffer severe psychological problems when they learn they have been cloned, and may suffer prejudice and intolerance from non-cloned humans. Cloning could also produce a black market for embryos. 6 Whatever happens, one thing is sure. This issue is not going to go away. Scientists such as Severino Antinori and Panagiotis Zavos are not going to give up trying to develop safe human cloning techniques. And religious organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church will continue to argue that the cloning of humans is morally indefensible. 5 So what can we expect to happen in the future? Most Western governments are in the process of legislating against human cloning. However, unless all the countries of the world make human cloning illegal (which is highly unlikely), we are likely to see more and more attempts at human cloning in the near future. Yesterday afternoon John’s mother was at work. John was at home with his father. They watched TV together. Then his father said: “Let’s cook dinner for Mum and we can all have dinner!” And they went to the kitchen. The father wanted to have some soup but John didn’t like it. They decided to have fish. The father took the fish and they started cooking it together.

Then John went to his bedroom to do his homework. His father went to his room to read a book. They didn’t go to the kitchen again.

Is it easy to be young in the 21 st century?

There is an opinion that youth is the best part of a person’s life. What is it – a fact or a stereotype? Happy Youth supporters’ arguments sound very convincing. According to them, when you are fifteen or sixteen, the future seems cloudless, the world around you is beautiful and friendly, and you feel strong and optimistic. Neither health nor other problems trouble you yet. You have the parents who protect and support you. You have friends who never betray you. Conflicts are certainly unavoidable, but they don’t last long, and it’s usually not a problem to survive through them. This is a conventional idea about young people. But is it true?

Psychologists insist that they have lots of work with teenagers. In their “happiest” years they have too many problems, and in most cases they don’t know how to solve them. They lack life experience and are not self-confident enough. They are often too categoric and can’t forgive other people’s faults and mistakes. A quarrel or misunderstanding can lead to serious suffering. “I don’t feel happy at all”, says Jack Green, 14. “I have no friends. It always works the same. At first it seems that I’ve found a real friend, but then I feel very disappointed because he betrays me – tells silly stories about me in the school, or doesn’t help when I need help. It has happened many times.”

“The thing which worries me a lot is my future job”, says Helen Carter, 15. “To have a good life in the future, I have to find a good job. If I want to find a good job, I have to get a good education first. But how am I supposed to choose my career line?! I don’t know what’s good and what’s bad for me. I cannot make an informal choice. I need to make some decision about my education very soon and I feel awfully scared. What if I make a mistake and get an education for a wrong job? This means that I’ll have to do the job which I don’t like or even hate. This makes me feel sick.”

On reading these words we, adults, realize that being young is not so easy. It’s rather challenging to be a teenager of the 21 st century, when the world changes so rapidly and people have to work very hard to keep pace with it (успевать за ним). Who can help young people feel less stressed out and more self-confident? Who can provide them with information and advice? The answer, I suppose, is evident.

The author of the article thinks that the opinion that the youth is the best of human life may be true. He presents rather (1)_____________ arguments for the idea. The strongest argument is that teenagers have fewer

THE WANDERING SHIP.

In the old days when ships crossed the seas and oceans under sails, every trip was an adventure. In 1872 an American ship was crossing the Atlantic from New York to Portugal. It was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when Captain Moorhouse saw another ship. He knew the ship. It was the “Marie Celeste” which he had seen some weeks before when it was leaving New York. The captain of the “Marie Celeste”, Briggs, had taken his wife and his two-years-old daughter on the trip.

Soon captain Moorhouse saw that something was wrong on the “Marie Celeste”. He sailed his ship nearer the “ Marie Celeste”. Captain Moorhouse and his sailors could see that there was nobody on the “Marie Celeste”. The captain and some of his men went to the ship in a boat. But they found nobody there. Everybody had left the ship. But why had they done so? There were no

signs of a fight. Everything was in its place. Why had all the people left a good ship in the middle of the Atlantic and disappeared ? That is the question which many people have tried to answer since that time. But nobody will know the answer. No man who had left the “Marie Celeste” was seen again.

Captain Moorhouse and his men saw no signs of panic on the ship. Captain Brigg`s watch lay on his table. There was a letter near it which somebody had just begun to write. The ship` s papers had gone, but the log was here. In some of the men` s boxes there was money. The most interesting thing was the fact that somebody had taken away a piece of planking . But why?

Some people thought that the sailors had killed the captain and his family and gone away in a boat. But there were no signs of a fight. Other people thought that many of the sailors had been ill and had died. Then the others left the ship and went away in a boat. But nobody knows the true story of the “Marie Celeste”
